Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer novels have been published since 1997. Originally this was under the Pocket Books imprint of Simon & Schuster (which are what this list concentrates on), however, after Disney Entertainment acquired 20th Century Studios in 2019, the publishing license has fallen under Disney’s Hyperion Avenue Books, which has published new Buffy novels since 2022, not included here.

This list is not exhaustive; I’ve left out many novels, such as those that recount actual TV episodes (eg: The Harvest novelisation covers the episodes, ‘Welcome to the Hellmouth’ and ‘The Harvest’ while The Xander Years, Vol. 1 covers, ‘Teacher’s Pet,’ ‘Inca Mummy Girl,’ and ‘Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered’ and so on), or that take place before the television series begins. I’m also ignoring novels based on the Angel TV series, or that crossover with Angel. I hope this creates a list of original fiction from the Simon & Schuster era that feels like these could be ‘missing episodes’ from the TV series.

Season 4

These Buffyverse tales take place during Buffy Season 4  (from Autumn 1999 until Spring 2000).

Buffy Season 4 is very poorly represented in the Simon & Schuster novels for my purposes, with the four-part series I’m including below, set in an alternate dimension. There’s also a three-part series with the umbrella title of Unseen, which is a crossover with Angel (which I’m not following here). An Oz-centric novel, Oz: Into the Wild, rounds out the era which I’m also not including per my list criteria.

Season 6

These Buffyverse tales take place around Buffy Season 6 (from Autumn 2001 until Spring 2002).

Much like Buffy Season 4, this is another poorly represented season in the Simon & Schuster range, with a couple of Angel crossover novels I’m not including here and a three-part Willow series which I am including, but only with some reluctance as the premise is that ‘Dark Willow’ did not return to being good as quickly. In other words, it’s less ‘missing episode’ in feel and more speculative.
