Virgin Publishing
Virgin Publishing served as the book publishing branch of Virgin Enterprises and was responsible for releasing licensed Doctor Who fiction and non-fiction in the early-to-late 1990s.
During this time, Virgin released the Doctor Who New Adventures (1991-99) and Missing Adventures (1994-97) novels, along with the Virgin Decalogs (1994-97) anthologies along with Licence Denied, an anthology of fan writing curated by Paul Cornell.
After the BBC terminated Virgin’s license, the New Adventures persisted with Bernice Summerfield as the central character, continuing to produce stories set in the Doctor Who universe without featuring the Doctor.
In 2007, a decade after officially ceasing to publish Doctor Who material, Random House acquired a majority shareholding, effectively concluding Virgin’s status as an independent publishing entity.
Similar to BBC Books, it now operates as an imprint within the Ebury Publishing division. Since 2014, a few Virgin novels have resurfaced as reprints under BBC Books, owing to their shared publishing company.
